Knife Repair and Rehandling

We get requests to repair or rehandle knives often. We have repaired and rehandled hundreds of knives over the last decade and we pride ourselves on our work. We’ve done military knives for museums, heirlooms and knives for people who simply wanted a different color handle. Buck Knives sources their rehandle work to us as well.

Here’s some useful info / FAQ’s when wanting a knife repaired or rehandled.

Rehandling Your Knife

We charge $120 in labor per knife + materials and shipping back to you. It’s labor intensive and we have to work slowly with industrial machines to make sure we don’t damage your one of a kind knife. Expect the job to take 1-2 weeks or more depending on what type of handle you’d like. If we have to order special materials it could take longer.

Note that rehandling a knife is major surgery. We try to keep the knife exactly as it arrived, but there may be a scar here or there. Most of the time the evidence of the rehandle is minimal and you won’t notice.

You can choose whatever material you like or provide your own material. We use synthetics like micarta or G10 (the most durable material choices) or we can put on a nice wooden handle. Popular choices are oak, mesquite, pecan, maple, ironwood and more. Expect your materials to cost between $10 and $25 depending on your choice of materials (handle material, liner, pins, etc.).

Most rehandle jobs are priced something like this $120 labor + $10-$20 in materials + $10-15 shipping back to you.

Knife Repair

Fixing broken tips or setting a new edge – We charge $25 to fix a broken tip or put on a new edge. We have to grind down to the lowest point of the break and create a new edge on the knife. Then we’ll resharpen.

Sharpening – We will sharpen the knife for free if we rehandle it.

Can any knife be rehandled?

Unfortunately, no. We only work on full tang knives. That is a knife where the steel runs completely through the handle of the knife. We will do hidden tang military knives (typically the leather washer type) and will consider hidden tang Japanese knives. We do not rehandle partial tang knives. This is where the steel runs halfway through / on top of the handle material. We also do not work on non-American damascus knives. If you paid less than $100 for your damascus knife then it’s not made in the USA.
